She dreamt she travelled to the moon with her lover. They found a placid lake on the surface. They swam in the moon lake, the water leaving their skin glistening with moonbeam. She left the water, dripping, to walk the shoreline as the dark moon sky showed her the near by planets – Earth, Mars, Venus – and the far away other-suns. She found moon shells, moon rocks of infinite variations, and the occasional shard of ethereal, ancient pottery, made by long forgotten extinct tribes of moon women and men. She filled a small cloth bag with the treasures, anxious to show them to friends and family back on Earth. Further down the shoreline, her lover came out of the lake onto the shore, the moon water cascading down his long limbs as it ran down his lean frame, back lit by a million bits of starlight, and she smiled.
She was spending the night at her girlfriend’s house again. Her girlfriend’s family was originally from The South, as her mom always said. They didn’t have accents like the people on Hee Haw, though, that her mom also said were from The South. The Olympics were on TV and her girlfriend’s family was very interested in the games. She started talking to her friend about the runners in the races they were watching. The friend’s mom was saying that it really wasn’t fair to have black people and white people run in races against one another. She didn’t understand this, because her mom had always told her that people were the same, no matter what color their skin was. She asked her friend why it wasn’t fair, did she think? Being a year older, and having grown up somewhere else first before coming to where they lived now, her friend knew a lot more things than she did. “Black people are built way different than white people,” came the answer “on account of their hip sockets not being the same as for whites, so they can run faster than white folks.” She thought about this for a minute, then she asked “So that means that black people are better than white people, right?” Her friend rolled her eyes, and let out a big sigh “You are so stupid” was all her friend said.
